Growers will start to harvest hops on August 20; yields will be average
Hop growers will start this year’s harvest about August 20, so roughly in the same term as the last year. A quality of plant is satisfactory; yields should be comparable with the last year, said Jaroslav Hájek from the Žatec coop Chmelařství today. Growers estimates a yield about a ton of hop per hectare; the last year it was 1,08 ton. They planted 5 659 hectares with hop this year which is by 214 hectares less than last year. “The reason of decrease of planted acreages is a lack of money for renewal of hop gardens. A half of them is older than 15 years which is three years above an ideal age average.”
