European vine-growers do not support Commission’s plans

A record from meeting negotiating on a proposal of reform of European wine market introduced by the European Commission which took place in Brno. Liberalization of wine market and a mass liquidation of vineyards will not help to European vine-growers and wine producers. Rather it is essential to maintain a control over an origin and quality of wines produced in the EU. At the same time it is necessary to reduce high subsidies for distillation of surpluses of wine and to stop using low-class vine yards. These points were agreed last week by representatives of the Association of European viticultural regions (. Representatives of 65 viticultural regionsfrom 16 countries at their meeting in Brno negotiated on a proposal of the European Commission concerning a reform of European wine market.

Scientists from Brno will help in world fight with anabaenas

The national center for anabaenas and toxins in Brno will start already from September to create for UNESCO a worldwide database of means, methods and technologies for fight with water bloom which still more often pollutes dams, ponds and lakes. Information will be used for a fight with anabaenas in the whole world. Blahoslav Maršálek, a director of the center said it today to ČTK. The center was created the Academy of Sciences with experts from Masaryk’s University in Brno last year. Establishment of the database will be a protection against all sneaking experts and businessmen offering doubtful means for liquidation of anabaenas. “Recently there is too many such people. They cite usually passages from specialized publication but they can not cope with concrete problems”, Maršálek said.

EU opened tender for export of intervention reserves of Czech barley

The European Union opened a tender for export of 53 665 tons of barley from Czech intervention reserves. The cereals are stored in Belgium and the reasons for the effort to sell it are problems with capacity. It was revealed today, according to Reuters agency the EU official bulletin. The first tender for export of Czech barley ended on the 22nd June. However, they did not succeed to sell the whole offered part. A new tender will be realized in several rounds, each one week, and will end on the 28th June 2007. The export licence will be in force for four month from the date of emission.

Hop growers estimate fall of yields by as much as one quarter this year

Stekník (Louny region) – Growers of hop estimate a fall of yields by as much as one quarter this year. Last year they harvested record 7831 tons of hops; the yield reached 1,38 tons from a hectare. This year it will be 1,02 to 1,06 from hectare. A part of harvest was damaged by May hail-storm; the growths were negatively influenced also by tropical weather in July, a secretary of the Hop Growers Union of the Czech Republic, Zdeněk Rosa, said it to ČTK today. He added that quality of hop should be good, however, it will show itself after harvest. Hail stones damaged this year as much as 1000 hectares of hop gardens, especially in Rakovník region, from it 300 hectares intensively.
