Water drastically runs low in rivers and wells in the Czech Republic
Even though on some places of the republic even rainstorms appeared in recent days, generally water in Czech rivers runs low. Also levels of underground water decreases; land dries up, and on many places water disappears from wells. “Flow rates reach mostly 20 – 60 percents of long-term averages for this period”, Jan Daňhelka, a hydrologist from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute in Prague said to Právo. The worse situation is in middle and smaller streams. In the Central Bohemia it is the river Berounka and its affluents, above all Litavka, Sázava, and further also some streams in a drainage area of the river Orlice.Gandalovič: CR will promote liberalization of agriculture in EUPetr Gandalovič, the Minister of Agriculture said to journalists today, that during its presidency in the European Union in the first half of 2009 the Czech Republic would defend rather liberalization opinions in the area of agricultural policy. According to him it means among others also a gradual reduction of subsidies in agriculture and vice versa maintenance of the level of subsidies for development of countryside and its infrastructure.
Veleba: Low prices of milk endanger self-sufficiency of CR in its productionAccording to the president of Agrarian Chamber, Jan Veleba, low milk prices endanger Czech cattle breeding and thereby also self-sufficiency of the Czech Republic in milk production. Since 1989 states of cattle have decreased by more than a half and according to ACH low prices of milk would fasten the decrease in number of cattle. The biggest Czech dairy works Madeta announced on Monday that it would lower a buy-out price of milk. It will pay 7,80 crowns for a liter to farmers from the coop Jih for July which is roughly by 70 hallers less in comparison with June. Farmers dislike the decrease in prices and require higher prices for milk.
