Monday is Day Without Cars in all Europe

In all European Union Monday the 22nd of September is European Day Without Cars (EDWC) as well as in tens of Czech and Moravian towns. People can personally try how streets of our towns could look like if people preferred urban mass transportation (UMT), walking, or bicycle to cars. Therefore in many Czech and Moravian towns some streets or squares will be closed and people will be able to enjoy at last one day without cars in their town. Day Without Cars for children and adult will take place also in Havlíčkův Brod in the closed street Štáflova. All day long passengers on UMT stations and in UMT carriages will get small gratuities and materials on EDWC – with oral acknowledgements for using mass transportation instead of a car.

Genetically modified crops are great at better carbon dioxide balance

A study of British consultancy firm PG Economics confirmed a contribution of genetically modified crops growing for environment. The economic contribution of growing of genetically modified crops is well known. The new study confirms also ecological merits. The study by British consultancy firm PG Economics showed that in growing of genetically modified crops less greenhouse gases is emitted, higher yields are reached, and less preparations for plant protection is needed. During 1996 – 2006 economic and ecological effects of genetically modified soya, corn, cotton and rape were examined.

Ministers of environment V4 discussed mainly climatic policy in Budapest

In Thursday and Friday last week ministers of environment of Visegrad four (V4) – the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland - met in Budapest. Among topics of their discussion problems of climatic changes and measures for reduction of greenhouse emissions prevailed. Martin Bursík acquainted his colleagues with a course of preparation and priorities of Czech presidency in the EU Council in the first half of 2009. Ministers emphasized in a final declaration that climatic changes and reduction of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere belong among the most important topics in the area of environment.
