High-productive dairy cows burden environment less with methane

In discussions about climate, cattle is still more and more often designated as an important co-participant which contributes in no small way to Earth warming by means of methane emission, which it emits during rumination in the outside environment. However, the share of cattle in climatic changes should be estimated realistically and breeding of ram animals should not be deplored at large. It is opinion of rural inhabitants in Saxony. Long-term investigations proved that the cattle contribution to an effect of green-house gases is imperceptible and thanks to increasing milk production it even shows decreasing tendency.

About success of veterinary diplomacy in Paris

All the last week (24.-29.5.) negotiation took place at meeting of the World Organization for Animal Health – OIE (Office international des epizooties) in Paris. EU countries were in frame of the presidency represented by our republic, namely by Milan Malena, the central manager of the State Veterinary Administration of the ČR. OIE associates approximately 170 countries of all the world and the ČR is one of 28 of founding countries in 1924.

Research: It is possible to fight against diseases by growing special potatoes

Potatoes should be even healthier food than they are now, specialists of the Research Potato-growing Institute in Havlíčkův Brod assert. Throughout a five-year research project they proved that with changes in growing technology it is possible to get bulbs with a higher content of antioxidants, substances which help to reduce a risk of occurrence of dangerous diseases including heart stroke and cancer. The special offer could retrieve consumers´ interest of in potatoes whose Czech consumption decreases.

Sowing of corn in USA gets in delay

A raise in price was recorded in frame of yesterday´s business séance on the exchange Chicago Board of Trade in the most active July futures contract for corn. The cause was speculations according to which American farmers in the Midwest of USA will change their intention and they will sow soya on remaining areas instead of corn. The reason are rains which caused missing of sowing on remaining areas and thereby also the optimal time for reaching a maximal corn yield. According to American Ministry of Agriculture at the end of May 93 % of the total planned area was sowed with corn in the United States.
