Food consumption decreased slightly last year, food expenditures increased

Consumption of food in the Czech Republic expressed in constant prices decreased year-on-yearly by 1.6 percents last year. Owing to consumer price growth, people paid for them at average 22 500 crowns per head, so by 278 CZK more than in 2009. It results from data published in the Report on state of agriculture 2010. The year-on-year increase in food good prices reached 1.5 percents last year and it was the same as the total increase in prices of consumers´ goods and services.

Brazilian José Graziano da Silva was elected new chief of FAO

Brazilian José Graziano da Silva was elected the new director general of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UNO from six candidates today. The FAO is tasked to fight with the world starvation. The change in management of the organization comes at the time when food prices lie near to record maximums. Graziano has been the FAO chief for the area of Latin America and Carribean islands till this time. In the head of FAO he replaces Senegalese Jacques Diouf who has been in the function for 18 years, the agency AP wrote.

Support to fresh-water fishery but also necessity of quality, not exaggeratedly bureaucratic legislative - it is on what experts at round table agreed

The first round table on problems of fresh-water fishery in connection with a reform of Common Agricultural Policy has taken place at the Ministry of Agriculture. The Minister of Agriculture Ivan Fuksa participated in the meeting as well as many experts, from representatives of fishing plant and associations to representatives of university sphere. The discussion showed not only the current needs, but also the importance of support of fresh water fish breeding in the future.

Owing to regulations for farms, farmer markets lack sellers

Farmer markets, number of which has already exceeds one hundred in the Czech Republic, are short of farmers able to sell their products there. Complicated regulations arisen in recent past discouraged many farmers from costly investment in small-scale production. Farmers do not manage to react fast on a huge increase in interest in their production. Representatives of the Private Agriculture Association (ASZ) stated it at a press conference today. “When we return six, seven years back, rules were set up uselessly hard”, a chairman of ASZ Josef Stehlík told.
