Government approved amendment on sale of state land to EU citizen

The government has approved a draft amendment which will enable a sale of state agricultural land only to citizens of member states of the European Union and countries of European Economic Area. The ban of land sale to foreigners was negotiated by the Czech Republic at accession in the EU seven years ago; this exception stopped to hold at the beginning of May. According to the Ministry of Agriculture (MZe) the amendment should secure a sale of agricultural land to farmers who have already farmed on it. The condition will be so that the field area would amount at least to ten hectares and farmers have managed it at least for 36 months. The aim of the proposal is also to unify conditions for transfers of agricultural land to agricultural entrepreneurs and prevent a preferential acquisition of land by persons who do not operate agricultural production.
