FAO: Third of foods is thrown away

Losses of produced foods amount annually to 1.3 mld. t in the food chain from the primary production to the consumer. The causes are e.g. unsold overproduction, unsuitable after-harvest conditions, well-being and sloth of consumers. According to the FAO report processed by Swedish Food and Biotechnologies Institute, 1.3 mld. tonnes, i.e. one third of products determined for human nutrition is not used. A biggest part is in advanced countries: in the USA and Europe the waste per person yearly amounts to 95 - 115 kg while in sub-Sahara Africa and south-east Asia the waste represents only 6-11 kg.

I welcome a calm course of today´s action and I am glad to here argument at the meeting from both sides the activists and the local inhabitants who support the cutting. Nothing changes in my present opinion of Šumava problems and their solutions. I remind again that I am against any politicizing of this problem; it is dealt with an expert not political affair and collecting political points at the expense of the nature.

Biggest unfairness of minister to farmers

Also farmers in the region Ústí nad Orlicí are very unsatisfied with a decision made by the Minister of Agriculture on stopping of bio-gas stations building. It is a typical case of agricultural contraception when we learn about suitability of building of bio-gas stations; we open the 13th round of reception of applications; applicants pass a big number of negotiations and spend a considerable sum of means for projects, planning licence; they negotiate laboriously credits with banks and then everything is cancelled by one incomprehensible decision.

ČSSD and SZ ask for checking of police practice in Šumava

A chairman of opposition ČSSD Bohuslav Sobotka called upon the Home Office Jan Kubice to check behaviour if the police within the tactics against activist blocking cutting of threes attacked with wood engraver in Šumava. Testimonies of activist about bad manners from the side of the police worried also the Strana zelených (Green Party). Therefore, the Greens, according to a chairman Ondřej Liška, ask besides the examination of the police´s behaviour by an inspection also a presence of independent observers in the blockade place.
